Slant Awards Spring 2012

Announcing the SLANT AWARDS SPRING 2012 Competition and this competition is open to all, with the challenge being to design a concept plan for a city sector which is undergoing urban renewal.

As in our previous competitions we want participants to have as free a hand as possible when designing this project; therefore we are keeping the brief and the entry requirements to a minimum.

The city in question is not a real city, it has been designed solely for this competition, and its location is not being specified.

It is a generic city that could be almost anywhere in the world and participants are free to choose the country in which you would like this imaginary city to be located.

This is a worldwide competition open to all those who have an interest in landscape design and urban planning, and students are especially encouraged to enter.

ACMA SEMINARS

REMAKING LANDSCAPES / LISBON WATERFRONT International design seminar lisbon July 23 – August 1, 2012 In the past 25 years, numerous design experiences have investigated the reconversion of decommissioned port areas as unique opportunities for urban development, not only to reinforce a hoped-for contact between the city and the water but also to introduce new activities that can enrich and make urban life attractive. This process, initiated in the 1990s with the construction – along the banks of the Tagus River – of the Belém Cultural Centre to the west and the EXPO district to the east, has recently been accelerated with the agreement between the Lisbon municipal government and the port authority to grant access to most of the nineteen linear kilometers of coastline of wharves, docks, warehouses and terminals that can handle one of the most voluminous movements of goods and passengers in Europe. A first project for a new cruise terminal (250,000 passengers per year) by Joao Carrilho da Graça has stimulated debate on the future of the possible relations between the attractive old town, now marginal to the dynamics of the metropolitan population, and opportunities produced by the port area. Giving shape to a project for public space (parks and gardens) – imagined by the City of Lisbon to provide continuity among the historical nuclei, from Marvila to Poço do Bispo, present along the eastern side of the city – means rethinking a new image in which elements of the urban landscape such as the São Jorge castle and São Vicente de Fora monastery can re-emerge. DIRECTION Antonio Angelillo, João Nunes IN COLLABORATION WITH Municipality of Lisbon, deputy mayor and town planning assessor Manuel Salgado LABORATORIES BY CZ Studio (Paolo Ceccon, Laura Zampieri)_Venezia, Giorgio Peghin_Cagliari, Joao Gomes da Silva_Lisbona. Tutors: Eduardo Pinto_Lisbon, João Sampaio_Lisbon CONFERENCES BY: JOAO NUNES_Lisbon, MANUEL MATEUS_Lisbon, GONCALO BYRNE_Lisbon, JOAO LUIS CARRILHO DA GRAÇA_Lisbon ACTIVITIES/ PROGRAMME The seminar will be divided into four parts: territory knowledge and more specifically of the project area; in-depth analysis of the technical and theoretical aspects of the problem in question; planning laboratories in study groups and general discussions; work exposition and communication of the results to the public. REGISTRATION The seminar is designed mainly for newly graduates and students in architecture, yet also proposed to technicians and professionals as a moment of work updating. The 100 hour seminar is part of the Continuing Formation programme of the Barcelona UPC. Attendance implies attainment of the “Remaking Landscapes” attendance Certificate. The 10 ETCS credits are also spendable within the programme of the Barcelona UPC Masters in Landscape Architecture which ACMA has been organising as of 2009 in Milan. Third Careggi Seminar

The third appointment of the Careggi Seminars, initiative launched by UNISCAPE under the aegis of the Tuscany Region, will be held on Thursday 14 June 2012 in Florence in sala Pegaso, Piazza Duomo 10.
The title is: The role of soundscapes in a biocultural perspective.
Below a brief Presentation by the coordinator, Professor Almo Farina, University of Urbino: “For soundscapes we mean all sounds that come from the environment and that are the result of energy produced by physical phenomena (geophonies: wind, flowing waters and so on), biological phenomena (biophonies: the singing of birds, the croak of amphibians, the shrill of cicadas, etc.), antrophic phenomena (antrophonies: noises of cars, air planes, trains, industries and so on). Soudscapes according to their quality can be classified as soundscapes with high (acoustic) fidelity or Hi-Fi when each sound component can be distinguished and thus does not sound degraded. On the contrary, they are defined Lo-Fi or with low acoustic quality those soundscapes in which noises cover the sounds. Soundscapes are not only important according to an aesthetic prospective, but also from a strictly biological point of view as context for animal and human communication. Moreover from a purely human point of view, soundscapes contribute to the conservation of the cultural heritage of places and to their identity and their quality is essential for any recreational use.”

Morning session’s presentations:
Introduction by Anna Marson, Minister for Spatial Planning and Territory, Tuscany Region and Carlo Magnani
